What types of feathers Should I use?

The simple answer is, to keep things simple. Peacock and Pheasant tail feathers are your best first options because they are used on a number of patterns, including the very popular Pheasant Tail Nymph. In addition, if you use soft hackle flies or North Country flies then buying a pair of partridge, snipe or woodcock wings would make great options. The covert feathers also make a beautiful soft hackle.
